Current New York Salesperson Exam-Site and ID Rules

As of August 27, 2026, a New York real estate salesperson exam candidate must bring current, government-issued identification that is photo-bearing and includes a signature, using an ID type on the Department of State's accepted list. The candidate must also bring the printed “Summary of Your Submission” page from eAccessNY, which includes the candidate number.

What this guide does

It explains the curriculum concept, applies it to New York scenarios and links the primary material used for regulated or date-sensitive claims. It is independent exam preparation, not legal, tax, lending, appraisal or eligibility advice.

New York Mobile ID is accepted only at the Albany, Buffalo, Hauppauge and New York City written-exam locations. It should not be treated as accepted at every site. The Department also states that no one will be admitted after the specified starting time.

This is a practical checklist, not a substitute for the candidate's eAccessNY appointment record. The scheduled-exam details control the date, location and starting time for that appointment.

Official source map

The Department of State's “Become a Real Estate Salesperson” page provides the current identification list, Mobile ID limitation, required confirmation page, calculator standard, prohibited-item rules, conduct rules, timing and special-testing instructions. The separate salesperson exam-sites page provides the Department's current public location list, late-arrival rule and emergency-cancellation instructions.

The Department's salesperson FAQ explains how to retrieve scheduled-exam details and how the six-day rescheduling window works. The Department's Special Testing Arrangements Request identifies the request process, supporting documentation and standard arrangements. These official sources were checked on August 27, 2026.

Which IDs does the Department currently accept?

The Department says the identification must be:

  • government issued
  • photo bearing
  • signature bearing
  • current, meaning not expired
  • one of the types on its published list

The accepted list currently includes:

  1. driver's license
  2. state-issued identification, such as a non-driver ID
  3. IDNYC card
  4. military ID
  5. United States passport
  6. Employment Authorization Card issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
  7. United States INS-issued ID
  8. Certificate of United States citizenship
  9. foreign passport
  10. Brazilian, Mexican, Honduran or Ecuadorian consular ID
  11. New York Mobile ID, but only at the four locations discussed below

Do not shorten this rule to “bring any photo ID.” A school card, workplace badge, warehouse membership card or expired government document is not on the Department's current list merely because it has a photograph.

If the document is damaged, recently changed, temporary or difficult to match to the appointment record, contact Licensing Services before exam day. The exam-site employee, not a study guide, determines whether the presented document satisfies the live rule.

Where is New York Mobile ID accepted?

The Department currently accepts New York Mobile ID, often called MiD, only at these written-exam locations:

  • Albany
  • Buffalo
  • Hauppauge
  • New York City

That location limit is part of the rule. A candidate scheduled in Binghamton, Franklin Square, Plattsburgh, Pomona, Rochester, Syracuse or Utica should not assume that MiD will be accepted there.

A photograph, scan or ordinary wallet image of a physical credential is not the same thing as New York Mobile ID. If relying on MiD at one of the four listed sites, check the Department page again close to the appointment and make certain the credential can be accessed when needed. Bringing an accepted physical ID as a backup can reduce avoidable risk.

Exam identification and license-application identification are not identical questions

The exam page publishes a broad list of identification accepted for entry to the written exam. The salesperson licensing requirements and application instructions separately address the New York photo driver license or non-driver ID information used for licensing and the documentation route for a person who does not have one.

A candidate should therefore ask two separate questions:

  1. What identification will the exam site accept on the appointment date?
  2. What identification information or supporting document will the later license application require?

Passing the first checkpoint does not answer the second. Nonresident and special-route applicants should follow the current application instructions rather than assuming the exam-day ID rule completes the licensing record.

The printed eAccessNY confirmation is also required

Identification is only one of the two items in the Department's “What To Bring” section. The other is the page the candidate was asked to print when scheduling.

The Department calls this page the “Summary of Your Submission.” It includes the exam information and candidate number.

Before leaving for the site, confirm that the printed page shows the correct:

  • candidate
  • license examination
  • date
  • starting time
  • location
  • candidate number

If the page was lost or not printed, the salesperson FAQ directs the candidate to log in to eAccessNY and choose “View Scheduled Exam Details.” Print the retrieved record. Do not depend on memory, a calendar title or an old appointment email when the official account can display the current scheduled details.

Current public exam locations

The Department's public salesperson exam-site page currently names 11 locations:

SyracuseState Office Building; the current public page does not display a street address
UticaState Office Building, 207 Genesee Street, 1st Floor, Room 107, Utica, NY 13501

This table is a checked snapshot. It is not an appointment calendar. A listed site may not appear for every desired date, and a location or room can change.

For Syracuse in particular, do not fill the missing street address from an old blog or map result. Use the location details in eAccessNY and contact the Department if the appointment record is unclear.

Your scheduled record matters more than a copied address list

There are three different records a candidate may see:

  • the Department's public list of possible exam sites
  • the live appointment choices offered in eAccessNY
  • the candidate's own Summary of Your Submission

The personal appointment record is the one that tells the candidate where and when to appear. A copied address list cannot show whether an appointment was moved, rescheduled or canceled.

Check the route in advance. Some sites are inside larger government or institutional buildings, and the room can take time to locate. The Department does not publish a universal “arrive this many minutes early” rule on the current salesperson page, so choose a sensible personal buffer rather than presenting an invented number as state policy.

Late arrival can end the attempt before it begins

The exam-sites page states that no one will be admitted after the specified starting time. It does not describe a grace period.

Work backward from the start time shown in eAccessNY. Include time for:

  • transit delays
  • parking or public transportation
  • building entry
  • security procedures
  • finding the correct floor and room
  • identification and appointment-document checks

An early-arrival target is personal planning advice. The Department's enforceable point is simpler: admission closes at the specified start.

Calculator rules

A calculator is permitted only if it is:

  • battery or solar powered
  • silent
  • nonprinting
  • free of an alphabetic keyboard

The Department also says personal digital assistants are not allowed. A phone calculator is not a solution because phones and other electronic devices must be turned off during the examination.

Use a basic calculator that clearly fits every listed condition. Practice with the same button layout before the appointment and check its power. A calculator is optional; a candidate should still understand the underlying arithmetic and how to estimate whether an answer is reasonable.

Items the Department says not to bring

The current site policies prohibit:

  • dictionaries
  • books
  • other reference materials
  • large bags
  • briefcases
  • visitors
  • guests
  • children
  • firearms

The page says there is no place to store prohibited reference materials, large bags or briefcases. Plan accordingly instead of expecting the site to hold personal items.

Eating, drinking and smoking are not permitted at the exam site. A person who brings food or beverages will be asked to dispose of them before entering.

Phones and electronic devices

Cellular phones, beepers and other electronic devices must be turned off during the exam. Silent mode is not the same instruction as powered off.

The safest preparation is to settle navigation, transportation and emergency-contact needs before entering. Avoid using a phone as the only calculator, confirmation record or ID unless it is the officially accepted New York Mobile ID at one of the four specified locations.

Conduct that can lead to dismissal

The Department says a person can be dismissed for:

  • using notes, books or other aids
  • giving or receiving help
  • removing examination materials or notes from the site
  • causing a disturbance
  • engaging in conduct contrary to proper examination rules

The exam supervisor makes decisions concerning disciplinary measures. Do not copy, photograph, reconstruct or share live examination content.

Weather and emergency cancellations

The Department warns that examinations may be canceled because of weather or another emergency. When hazardous conditions exist, its exam-sites page directs candidates to check the Department's Facebook or Twitter channels for a cancellation and says not to call the exam site.

The page identifies the Albany phone center at 518-474-4429 for exam information or assistance. A candidate can also contact a Division of Licensing Services office. Use Department contacts, not a building receptionist, to resolve an exam-administration question.

Recheck on the morning of the appointment when weather or an emergency may affect travel. A general building closure, transit alert or social post from another organization is not a substitute for a Department exam notice.

Testing modifications and accessibility

The Department tells a person who requires testing modifications not to schedule an exam first. Instead, call 518-474-4429 and follow the special-testing process.

The current Special Testing Arrangements Request asks for:

  • personal and contact information
  • the examination type
  • the classification of the request
  • the arrangements requested
  • supporting documentation from a physician or another qualified professional, or evidence of prior accommodations from a school or other institution

The form says all exams with special testing arrangements are administered to a reduced group in a separate, low-distraction area. It states that written examinations receive one hour of extended time. A person who needs an additional accommodation, such as a reader or scribe, lists it on the form, and the requested arrangement must be appropriate to the disability.

The completed form and supporting documents can be sent using the address or email shown on the current form. Because the Department says to arrange modifications before scheduling, begin early enough for communication and review. Do not book a standard appointment and assume it can be altered at the door.

A seven-day exam logistics plan

Seven days before

  • Open eAccessNY and verify the appointment.
  • Confirm the exact site, floor or room and start time.
  • Check that the intended ID is current and on the Department list.
  • Print the Summary of Your Submission.
  • If a change is necessary, check the FAQ's six-day rescheduling rule immediately.

Two days before

  • Plan the route and a personal arrival buffer.
  • Check the calculator against all four restrictions.
  • Remove study notes and prohibited items from the exam bag.
  • Review any weather or building-access concern.

The night before

  • Place the accepted ID and printed confirmation together.
  • Check the name, date, time, location and candidate number again.
  • Set more than one alarm if needed.
  • Stop trying to learn an entire new topic late at night.

The morning of the exam

  • Recheck Department cancellation information if conditions are uncertain.
  • Bring only permitted essentials.
  • Travel with enough margin for the building and room search.
  • Turn off electronic devices as instructed at the site.

Worked exam-day scenarios

Scenario 1: expired passport

Amir brings a United States passport that expired last month.

It does not meet the Department's requirement that the accepted identification be current. The fact that a United States passport appears on the list does not cure expiration.

Scenario 2: Mobile ID in Rochester

Priya plans to use New York Mobile ID at the Rochester site.

The current page limits MiD acceptance to Albany, Buffalo, Hauppauge and New York City. Rochester is not on that list. She should obtain an accepted physical document or contact the Department before the appointment.

Scenario 3: confirmation only on a phone

Leo saved the Summary of Your Submission as a phone screenshot.

The Department tells candidates to bring the page they were asked to print. He should retrieve the scheduled details in eAccessNY and print the page rather than depending on an electronic device that must be turned off.

Scenario 4: late at the building

Sam reaches the building after the appointment's starting time and asks for a short grace period.

The exam-sites page says no one is admitted after the specified start. It does not publish a grace period.

Scenario 5: phone calculator

Rosa leaves her basic calculator at home and plans to use the calculator app on her phone.

Phones and other electronic devices must be turned off during the exam. A phone calculator is not an allowed substitute.

Scenario 6: testing modification requested at check-in

Kai asks for extended time after arriving for a standard appointment.

The Department instructs candidates who require testing modifications not to schedule first and to contact Licensing Services. The special-testing request and supporting documentation should be handled in advance.

Common misconceptions

“Any government photo ID works”

No. The document must meet the Department's characteristics and appear on its accepted list.

“New York Mobile ID works statewide”

Not for this exam under the current rule. It is limited to four named written-exam locations.

“My appointment is in my account, so I need no paper”

The Department says to bring the printed Summary of Your Submission.

“Silent mode is enough for my phone”

The rule says electronic devices must be turned off.

“Every calculator is permitted”

No. It must be battery or solar powered, silent, nonprinting and have no alphabetic keyboard.

“The site will store my large bag”

The Department says prohibited materials, large bags and briefcases should not be brought because there is no storage.

“A listed city is an appointment”

No. The public site list shows possible locations. The eAccessNY appointment record confirms the candidate's actual date, time and place.
