These periods can have the same number of years while applying to completely different records.

The passed-result rule

The Department's current salesperson page says passed exam results are valid for a period of two years.

It does not say that:

• a passing result is an active license
• the result remains valid until you choose a broker at any future date
• submitting an incomplete application on the last day extends the result
• broker authorization replaces Department approval
• the two-year result period is the same as the license term

Treat Pass as a completed examination requirement with an expiration window.

Which date should you record?

Keep the examination date shown in eAccessNY and the date on which you confirmed the Pass result. The current linked application uses the phrase “within two years of the date you passed the examination” for an applicant using an approved education waiver.

The Department's public page does not explain in its general result section how to count an edge-case final day, time zone, weekend or system outage. If an application is close to the boundary, contact Licensing Services and follow its current instruction. Avoid relying on a private date calculator for a licensing deadline.

The safer plan is to avoid the boundary entirely.

What must happen after Pass

For the standard first-time exam-based route:

1. Confirm the Pass result in eAccessNY.
2. Verify the qualifying-education record.
3. Choose a New York licensed sponsoring real estate broker.
4. Obtain the broker and office UID.
5. Submit the online initial salesperson application and current fee.
6. Have the principal broker authorize the application.
7. Monitor the application for Department requests.
8. Wait for Department review and approval.
9. Verify the license status before licensed activity.

A current passed result is part of the applicable licensing process. Avoid assuming a pending or incomplete transaction creates a separate extension unless the Department says so for your facts.

A practical deadline plan

This is planning advice, not a new Department deadline.

During the first week after Pass

• save the result record
• confirm the course certificate and account details
• continue or begin broker interviews
• identify any disclosure documents or special application route

During the first month

• choose the sponsoring broker based on supervision, fees and fit
• obtain the correct broker and office UID
• complete the application if the records are ready
• ask the broker to authorize promptly

After submission

• check “Application Status Display”
• monitor the account email
• respond to Department requests through the authorized process
• verify approval rather than assuming it

If many months pass

Recheck the result date, course record, identification, sponsor and current application instructions. Resist the urge to assume the process and fees remain unchanged because they were different when the exam was taken.

If the result is approaching two years

Contact the Department promptly with the exact result and application status. A general article cannot decide whether a specific pending, incomplete or unusual application satisfies the current timing rule.

Exam-result validity versus course validity

The current salesperson application states that the 77-hour salesperson course, 75-hour salesperson course and 30-hour remedial course are valid for eight years after completion if they have not yet been used to obtain a license. Once one of those courses has been applied toward a license, it does not expire and may be used for upgrade.

That creates several possible combinations:

A student completed an approved 77-hour course, passed the state exam and then waited while considering a career change. The course's unused eight-year window and the exam's two-year window started from different events. The student cannot assume that a still-valid course makes the old Pass result valid beyond its own two-year period.

Exam-result validity versus license term

The exam-result clock concerns whether a Pass can support the licensing process. The license term begins only after the Department approves and issues the license.

The current application describes a $65 two-year license. The later license expiration appears on the license record.

Do not calculate the license expiration by adding two years to the exam date. Exam and license are separate records with separate starting points.

Exam-result validity versus renewal after expiration

The Department FAQ describes a two-year period after license expiration during which the renewal link remains available, subject to current renewal requirements and sponsorship for a salesperson.

That renewal period belongs to someone who already held a license. It is not an extension of a first-time passed exam result.

The FAQ describes a new licensing process, including the written examination, after that renewal period. Follow the current Department instructions for the exact expired-license and education record rather than applying the first-time result clock to it.

Special application paths

Education waiver

The current application says an applicant with an approved out-of-state education waiver must pass the state exam and submit the application, original waiver letter and fee within two years of the date the examination was passed.

This applicant uses the paper process described by the Department, not the standard online initial route.

Previously licensed applicant

The Department currently directs a previously licensed applicant to the paper application. Prior licensure may change which education records apply, but it does not justify choosing the standard online button without checking the published route.

Attorney-status or additional-license applicant

These routes also currently use a paper application. Follow the instructions for the category rather than assuming the ordinary exam-based workflow applies.

What if the two years have passed?

A result outside the Department's published two-year validity period should not be relied on as a current passed result. Contact Licensing Services to confirm the record and current requalification steps before paying or filing.

The Department's current page says a failed candidate may schedule another exam, and section 441 requires the written-examination qualification in the licensing framework. For an expired Pass, use the current eAccessNY and Department direction for taking a new examination rather than trying to reuse an invalid result.

Do not create a second account. The prior exam, course and licensing records should remain connected to the correct eAccessNY identity.
